CMJ Artist Spotlight: Fictionist

For Fans Of: MGMT, Phoenix, CHVRCHES

Fictionist has toured nationally and shared the stage with Imagine Dragons, Vampire Weekend, Neon Trees, Young The Giant, Robert Francis, and Shiny Toy Guns. Their forthcoming, Self-Titled album (Set for release on 10/7) was produced by Grammy-nominated Nate Pyfer – the end result being an album that combines Fictionist’s heralded art-rock sensibilities with Cat Stevens songwriting, Phoenix-style glitchy analog electronics, and CHVRCHES electro-pop architecture. What has been your biggest accomplishment this year so far?

Fictionist’s biggest accomplishment this year, by far, is making a record that we love and are incredibly proud of. We were tied up until January 2014 in an unsuccessful deal with Atlantic Records that hamstrung us for over two years, which is like an eternity in music time. But as soon as we were able, we hit the studio with one of our favorite producers and made the record we had been wanting to make all along. And at a recent concert we saw 7,000+ people going crazy for the music, which makes it all worth it. It’s a great year!

What are some of your goals for CMJ week?
Of course, our first goal is to simply play incredible shows, but we also want to discover great bands and be inspired by the music, just like everyone else. It would be fun to come away from CMJ with new show swaps and touring partners. Selfishly, we’re psyched to play at Arlene’s Grocery (among other CMJ showcases) because we can catch the late night jazz sessions. And our other goal is to not spend our entire tour budget at Shake Shack.

What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2014?
Shows, shows, shows. Nothing is healthier for us than getting our music into the ears and hearts of new friends through live concerts. We’re building up our touring schedule into 2015, including a few surprises. We’re also releasing a few more music videos like this one.
