With a balanced blend of soulful indie rock and melodic pop, Long Island’s BRAEVES call to mind bands such as The Shins, Grizzly Bear and Fleet Foxes – each song it’s own unwinding story told through intricately layered instrumentals, illuminating harmonies and verses that read as prose. The band joined forces with Producer Mike Watts (As Tall as Lions/The Dear Hunter) to record their debut EP, Drifting by Design, which was released on Sept. 9th, 2014. With support from outlets including Pure Volume, All Things Go, CMJ, and more, already behind them, this is set to be a big year for BRAEVES. What has been your biggest accomplishment this year so far?
We recorded our debut EP ‘Drifting by Design’ back in February and have been fortunate enough to receive some positive feedback. It has allowed us to communicate with so many different people in different states and countries through social media and find new fans every day. When we played our record release show at Cameo Gallery in mid September filling the room with new fans and new faces from front to back, It was an amazing feeling to see that the outreach and efforts we put in to this record had paid off.
What are some of your goals for CMJ week?
We are already part of an amazing showcase being featured in the Big Picture Media roster. It’s going to be incredible to play with so many amazing bands and definitely meet some great people. With so many different artists filling the city in such a short time, we’re going to try and check out as much as we can. But the number one goal is to play the shit out of our 20 minute set and enjoy the festival.
What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2014?
On Oct. 12th we are opening for Snowmine at Baby’s All Right and we’re playing at Glasslands Gallery in November. We are also in the middle of booking a bunch of out of state shows. Most importantly, we’ve been working on a ton of new music in preparation for a new record. And maybe a new single is in the works, who knows?!
