It’s New Year’s Eve. As I press play on New Jersey-based Action Item’s first track off Resolution, the band’s newest EP, an introductory rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” quickly captures my attention. Appropriate, considering the day.
As I begin reminiscing about the past year, I’m not quite sure what I’m listening to until about 30 seconds in. Then I get it. Action Item’s achievements this year are mentioned in lyrics such as “Do you know the feeling that you get when you accomplish something that you work for on your own?/Like 30 thousand sold or a thousand shows we played, they can’t take that away.” “Where We Left Off” is AI’s truthful tribute to 2012, featuring soft piano chords and reflections on the year. The track ends with vocalist Brian Cag singing, “This is my resolution.” and opens the door to 2013.
The record picks up the tempo with question-ridden “Good or Bad” followed by “Brave,” an anthem of positivity for when the going gets tough. From upbeat love song, “Bad For You,” Action Item close the seven-track EP with “Moments,” the softest song of the bunch. “Resolution” is a musical ride dedicated to your new year. In 25 minutes, my lesson was learned, thanks to Action Item. Decide what you do and do not need in your life, be “Brave,” realize how “Lucky” you are, and appreciate the “Moments” as they pass.
