In honor of the 86th Annual Academy Awards coming up this Sunday, we decided to take a step back and look at some Oscar looks of the past. More specifically, these looks are all from the 68th Oscars back in 1996; almost two decades ago!

Ladies were wearing simple but elegant gowns to the event and it just goes to show that less is more definitely more. From Mira Sorvino’s gorgeous full skirt to Halle Berry and Kate Winslet’s bright color choices, the fashion choices from the event were memorable. One of the most memorable could possibly be Sharon Stone’s famous coat and skirt combo. She made “cheap” look chic by putting together an old t-shirt from Gap with a velvet Armani coat and matching Valentino skirt and thus making fashion history as being (still) one of the best dressed at the show.

While trends may come and go, these looks go to show that staying classic and timeless is the way to go. Leave the gaudy or playful looks for the MTV Video Awards or the Grammy’s!

Be on the lookout this weekend to see what the trends for 2014 will be. Will they be reminiscent of these 1996 looks or seem totally off? You can watch the Red Carpet arrivals on E! starting at 5:30 EST tomorrow.
