Hey, everyone! My name is Jose and I sing in a band called Divided By Friday. We signed to Hopeless records back in 2010 and have been touring, writing and begging for your support since then. Three weeks ago, we released our brand new EP entitled “Modern Memoirs,” and it has been the most excited we’ve been over a release, ever.
If you’ve ever heard of Divided By Friday before, you know that we’ve been a band for a while now and that our new EP was a huge change for us. We started playing music together when we were fourteen, so as you can imagine, a lot has changed for us since then. We’ve seen the trends in the scene come and go over the years, and all the while we were young kids trying to figure ourselves out; trying to figure our music out. For a while, we thought we had ourselves figured out, as many young artists do, but it wasn’t until we took a step back and looked at where we were as a band and as musicians, that we saw where we truly wanted to be.
When the beginning of this year rolled around, we knew we’d be going to the studio to work on our next release and all plans pointed towards us recording a full-length record, but when it came down to it, we just weren’t in love with what we were doing. We had written over 25 “pop-rock” songs, but deep down we knew that we didn’t want to be a “pop-rock” band. All of our strengths as a band, and our own personal music preferences, made it obvious that we should be writing pop songs, but we were very scared of change.
Finally, we decided to just bite the bullet and to try writing exactly what we wanted. We let go of any expectations that others had for us and wrote songs that we knew we would love to listen to. We sent demos to Hopeless and they were so supportive that it made the process leagues easier for us and gave us a new found sense of confidence. After more demos were recorded and sent back and forth between us and the label, we were one hundred percent committed to this new style of music. We had never been more electrified by our own writing. It was like a breath of fresh air for our band.
We went to the studio with Zack and Ken for the entire month of April and put every ounce of emotion we had into the recording process. It was so exciting recording these songs because it was the first time we were able to incorporate a lot of the things we love and grew up listening to, into our own music. We wanted to keep the recording process as organic as possible, so all the strings were recorded live, all the gospel choir parts are live and we even created some of the synth sounds by ourselves. It was a long and sometimes trying process, but the final product made all the pain staking details worthwhile.
For the first time, I feel like you really get a sense of who we are as people, when you listen to our music. I feel like these songs portray such a sense of honesty that when you listen to them, you really are hearing a piece of our lives and personalities. When you play music for so long, it’s easy to lose sight of how special that is, but this new EP has really put a lot of things back into perspective for us. We could not be more excited for where this new direction takes us and we really hope you all enjoy this new music as much as we do. If you haven’t taken the time to listen to “Modern Memoirs” yet, please be sure to check it out.
